
The custom tire market has long operated on a simple principle: a bias-ply carcass, a wide profile, a retro look. Almost all American cruisers rode on Dunlop D404 or equivalents, and the choice was limited to a few references per size.
Since 2024, things have changed. Demand is shifting towards high-end tubeless radial tires, driven by increased expectations for stability and longevity on machines that often exceed 300 kg when empty.
Bias-ply or radial carcass: what it changes on a custom
The majority of historic custom motorcycles (Harley-Davidson Softail, Yamaha XV, Honda Shadow) run on bias-ply tires. The fabric layers cross diagonally under the tread, resulting in a soft sidewall and appreciable comfort on long straight stretches.
Radial tires, on the other hand, have layers perpendicular to the direction of travel, covered by a stabilizing belt. The result: less deformation at high speeds, better precision in curves, and more uniform tire warming. On a power cruiser or a heavy bagger, the difference is felt from the first highway turns.
Identifying the best custom motorcycle tires requires first checking what your rim accepts. Switching from bias-ply to radial is not always possible without changing the wheel. The motorcycle’s homologation booklet remains the reference: it lists the dimensions, load index, and minimum speed index that must be respected for compliant riding.

Cost per kilometer of a custom tire: the criterion that most guides ignore
Comparing two tires based on their purchase price makes little sense when one lasts twice as long as the other. The cost per kilometer is a more reliable indicator, especially on customs that cover large distances in a straight line with a heavy load.
A long-lasting touring tire (like the Metzeler ME 888 Marathon Ultra) has a higher catalog price than a standard tire, but its lifespan can be significantly longer. When calculated per kilometer traveled, it often turns out to be cheaper than a sport tire whose soft rubber wears out quickly.
Elements to include in the calculation
- The purchase price of the tire, including mounting and balancing. Some retailers charge extra for spoked rims or unusual sizes.
- The estimated mileage before replacement, taking into account your riding style (highway, city, frequent two-up).
- The frequency of replacement by pair or individually. On a custom, the rear tire wears out faster than the front due to the torque transmitted and the weight on the axle.
A cheaper tire to buy may cost more in use if you have to replace it every few thousand kilometers. Keeping a mileage log for each set of tires allows for objective comparisons from one replacement to the next.
Grip in the rain and touring rubber: compromises on custom
Customs often run on hard rubber tires, optimized for longevity. The downside: grip on wet pavement decreases significantly compared to a sport touring tire. The tread patterns evacuate water, but the composition of the compound remains the determining factor for wet grip.
Michelin, Pirelli, and Dunlop now offer custom references with dual-compound rubbers. The center of the tread maintains a hard compound for longevity, while the shoulders receive a softer rubber to improve grip when leaned over. On a café racer or a power cruiser pushed in curves, the difference becomes noticeable.
Field feedback varies on this point. Some long-lasting tire users report acceptable grip in the wet after several thousand kilometers, while others note marked degradation as the rubber hardens with age. The manufacturing date (DOT code on the sidewall) should be checked at purchase.

Dimensions and homologation: what the law requires on the road
Riding on the road with tires that do not conform to the dimensions approved by the manufacturer exposes you to liability in the event of an accident. The dimensions are listed on the registration document and in the user manual.
The three parameters to respect are width, aspect ratio, and rim diameter. A tire 150/80-16, for example, measures 150 mm in width, its sidewall height is 80% of that width, and it fits on a 16-inch rim. Changing any of these parameters can affect ground clearance, cornering behavior, and speedometer readings.
Points to check before purchase
- The load index must be equal to or greater than that recommended by the manufacturer. An insufficient index weakens the tire structure under the weight of the machine and the passenger.
- The speed index corresponds to the maximum speed that the tire can continuously support. On a custom limited to moderate speeds, this index is rarely a limiting factor, but it must be included in the homologation.
- The type of inner tube (TT) or tubeless (TL) depends on the rim. Classic spoked rims generally require an inner tube unless they are factory-sealed.
Changing brands or models of tires is possible as long as the dimensions and indices match. Any modification of the rim diameter or width beyond what the original homologation allows must undergo prior regulatory verification.
Ultimately, choosing a custom tire comes down to three axes: technical compatibility with your machine, the longevity/grip ratio suited to your actual usage, and the budget calculated over time. The right tire depends on the weight of the motorcycle, the riding style, and the local climate.
