Biological mechanisms that determine a duck’s longevity

Before comparing numbers between species, it’s essential to understand what wears out a duck’s body. Two factors dominate: basal metabolism and the ability for cellular renewal.

Ducks are endothermic birds whose body temperature remains high at all times. This rapid metabolism accelerates the wear of organs, particularly the liver and kidneys, which filter a significant amount of waste related to a diet rich in animal proteins (insects, mollusks, small fish).

Feathers also play an often underestimated role. The annual molt mobilizes considerable resources in keratin and trace elements. The mallard, the most widespread wild species in Europe, has a significant biological potential for longevity. In theory, this bird could live well beyond what most individuals achieve in the wild.

The reality is different. Most wild mallards die during their first year of life. Ducklings are exposed to a long list of predators: pike, herons, raptors, foxes, stray cats. Only a fraction of a brood reaches adulthood.

For adults, the pressure remains high. Hunting represents a major mortality factor in areas where it is practiced. Collisions with vehicles and power lines add to the non-natural causes. Diving ducks (scaups, goldeneyes) face additional constraints. Repeated diving in deep waters for feeding increases energy expenditure and exposure to pollutants accumulated in sediments. Scaup populations in industrial or intensive agricultural areas show lower survival rates than those living in preserved wetlands.

Intensive farming and effective lifespan: a considerable gap

In intensive farming, a duck’s lifespan has nothing to do with its biological potential. A duck destined for meat production is slaughtered within a few months.
